Shackle the Women
[Year : 2019] [Title: shackle the woman] [Medium: acrylic painting on paper] High heels are a powerful symbol. In the past, shoes were a marker of social status. In modern society, high heels have come to represent the subjugation of the female body under the guise of fashionable appearance. Many women wear high heels to enhance their appearance. To women, the primary function of the shoes is not the protection of their feet. Rather, shoes have become fetters that could even hurt them. In a society in which a woman’s appearance is considered to be one of the arenas of competition, many women consume high heels despite the apparent discomfort and pain. In certain labor markets in which women workers are forced to wear them, high heels serve as yet another device of control. The piece illustrates the pain and sad emptiness behind the outward glamour of high heels by juxtaposing the images of high heels and the empty basement.
